Surprisingly, adult polar bears in Norway have been piling on the pounds and looking healthier, even as the sea ice around them continues to dwindle. This trend is shaking up the common belief that less ice automatically means thinner bears.
Research teams in Svalbard, a group of Norwegian islands far up north, have been keeping track of these bears for years. They gathered data from 1,188 measurements taken from 770 adult polar bears. Interestingly, since 2000, the Norwegian Polar Institute found that bears have been gaining weight even while the surrounding ice began to vanish.
