In a groundbreaking ruling, a judge in the Brazilian state of Rondonia has held two beef slaughterhouses and three cattle ranchers responsible for buying cattle raised in a protected area of the Amazon rainforest. The companies involved, Distriboi and Frigon, along with the ranchers, have been ordered to pay a total of $764,000 for causing environmental damage. This decision is the first of many similar lawsuits seeking compensation for deforestation linked to cattle trading in the region.
